Animal communication was one of the bonus gifts of my Reiki training. Maybe it was there all along, but I didn’t notice it. I've always felt a deep connection to nature and to animals… all animals including my own pets, as well as birds, insects, salamanders, frogs, turtles… you name it!
I first noticed the gift of animal communication when I did Reiki for animals. I could sense, hear, see what they were thinking and feeling. They could convey messages back to me. It was absolutely amazing to be able to connect on this more intimate level. The following is an account of a special interaction with a horse during one of my Animal Reiki classes.
In July 2019, my Reiki teacher and mentor asked me to do an Animal Reiki class with her. She was going to teach Reiki 1 and attune her students at the studio where she taught, then they were going to drive down to her daughter’s farm, where she had a horse, two miniature horses, two donkeys, and several goats. A friend of ours was also bringing his dog, a chocolate Labrador retriever, to demonstrate Reiki positions and techniques for our pets.
Reiki is a wonderful way to bring calm and healing to our pets and animals. There are different considerations with animals, as they exercise their free will differently than humans. It’s important to still ask for energetic permission and honor the animals wishes during a Reiki session. Often times the energy is beamed at a distance, so that the animal is more comfortable with the interaction. And when the animal moves away, it’s important to honor that they have had enough, understand that they have taken what they need, and the healing is complete. There is no need for our own egos and expectations to get in the way.
When I arrived at the farm early to do the Animal Reiki class, I was to get the horse from the pasture and bring her into the barn and put her on crossties, so that I could demonstrate where the chakras are on the horse to our class and also demonstrate how to give the horse Reiki.
My mentor told me that they called the horse Big Brown. The horse was a mostly chestnut and white paint mare with white blaze and white socks. She was rather large, probably about 15 hands, her back being almost as tall as I am (I’m 5’ 1”).
I got to the farm, found a halter and lead rope in the barn, and went out to bring Big Brown inside. It was a beautiful summer day, bright and sunny, blue skies. The pasture was nice and green. Big Brown was at the far end of the pasture. I walked toward her with the halter and lead rope, and as I approached her, she looked up, noticing the halter, and put back her ears. Uh oh… I wasn’t sure how this was going to go.
I approached her slowly, talking softly so I wouldn’t scare her, calling her gently by name. As I got closer, she would dart away. We tried this dance for a while, until I finally decided that this wasn’t meant to be. Forcing Big Brown to come in for a Reiki session didn’t really align with what we were trying to accomplish that day.
When everyone arrived, my mentor asked me about Big Brown. I just said that she didn’t want to come into the barn. So, we improvised, and all was well. We did the demonstration on the dog in the barn, and the dog responded well to the Reiki. He was such a friendly, older dog, and he really seemed to appreciate the soothing, healing Reiki energy on his back and hips. He looked at us happily and gratefully as a few students beamed energy to him on a table in the barn. When he had enough, he looked to his owner to help him down and just walked away, wagging his tail.
Then we all went out to the pasture, and we were able to give Reiki to the miniature horses, as well as the donkeys, and they just loved it! Especially the donkeys, they would move closer to our hands so that whatever area that needed healing would be closer to us. You could definitely see how instinctively the animals understood that this was high vibrational energy that was beneficial to them.
Meanwhile, Big Brown was still at the far end of the pasture, nibbling grass, and looking up occasionally to see what was going on near the barn. Suddenly, she whipped her head up and came galloping across the pasture towards us… specifically towards me! I caught the movement out of the corner of my eye in time to see her galloping across the field and I stood straight up, like in mountain pose, feet firmly planted and looked right at her matching her vibe, projecting my heart energy forward. She stopped right in front of me and kind of snorted. I sensed her strong spirit, and I knew that she wanted to be a part of our session after all. I asked her, “Do you want some Reiki too, Big Brown?” I heard her speak telepathically to me, in a firm and somewhat annoyed voice, “I don’t like that name.” I asked her silently, “What would you like to be called?” She looked away for a moment, towards the horizon… then turned back to me and I heard, “My name is Wind Dancer. That’s what you can call me.” I replied, “Wind Dancer… well that is a much prettier name than Big Brown. I like it. So be it, from now on, I will refer to you as Wind Dancer.”
After that, Wind Dancer was happy to let me show the new Reiki students the major chakras on a horse. She stood still for me in the field as I gave her Reiki. And she even let the students try, as well, as she continued to nibble grass.
We had a great day, and we were able to experience giving Reiki to all the animals. The students loved the experience, and I’m looking forward to the next Animal Reiki class. See "Booking" to check for upcoming classes.
Here are some photos of Wind Dancer after she agreed to let us give her loving Reiki energy…
